Non-specific urethritis (NSU) refers to a general inflammation of the urethra, which is the tube transporting urine from the bladder. It is called “non-specific” because the inflammation can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, irritants or other underlying conditions.
At Southkenmd.co.uk, we recognize that sexual health concerns often require prompt attention, which is why we offer quick and reliable NSU testing and treatment. Our clinic also provides a confidential and comfortable environment to ensure you receive the best care with total discretion.
The symptoms of NSU can vary; but common ones are:
NSU is primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact. For this reason, it is essential to communicate openly with your sexual partner(s) about concerns regarding your sexual health to reduce the risk of transmission.
Tests are available for NSU using PCR technology that looks for Mycoplasma genitalium and Ureaplasma urealyticum DNA. These are major bacteria that commonly cause NSU. The tests allow us to identify which bacteria (if any) is triggering the issue so we can treat the infection appropriately.
However, NSU can also be caused by non-bacterial factors such as too much friction during sex or masturbation, an allergic response to soaps or detergents or excessive alcohol consumption. These causes are impossible to detect in laboratory tests.
If you have symptoms such as discomfort in the urethra, unusual discharge, or a burning sensation when urinating, testing for NSU is recommended. It is also vital if you’ve had unprotected sex or suspect recent exposure to a sexually transmitted infection. Early detection is necessary for effective treatment along with prevention of complications.

Testing is vital for maintaining your sexual well-being and peace of mind. If left untreated, NSU can lead to more severe complications, such as chronic pain or infertility. Additionally, testing helps prevent the transmission of the infection to sexual partner(s). Therefore, we recommend routine testing as a preventative measure to ensure both your health as well as the health of others.
The bacteria that cause NSU can be effectively treated with a short course of antibiotics. We can prescribe the appropriate antibiotics after a consultation if the test results show that you have NSU.
