INR Blood Testing

Our clinic provides International Normalized Ratio (INR) testing for patients using warfarin. Warfarin refers to an anticoagulant medicine that reduces the production of vitamin K in the body, which is a vital component in blood clotting. Understanding the importance of this test is key to managing health effectively.

Why INR Blood Testing Is Important

The medication is prescribed to prevent blood clots for people with the following medical conditions:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Prevents blood clot formation in the veins of the legs.
  • Pulmonary embolism: Reduces the risk of blood clots in the lungs.
  • Atrial fibrillation: Manages irregular heart rhythms to lower the risk of stroke and clots.

The main purpose of INR testing is to keep track of the time it takes for blood to clot. Regular tests ensure that the medication is working effectively and maintains the required blood thinning levels. The test will be done in the hospital.

What to Expect During INR Blood Testing

The INR testing process involves taking blood from a vein near the arm or elbow. It is a straightforward process involving three main steps:

  • Preparation considerations: This encompasses all processes that a patient goes through before the testing and may include hydration, dietary monitoring, and professional guidance.
  • Blood extraction: Your GP or nurse will explain the procedure to you and then remove a small blood sample. After that, the sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Results: Once the laboratory results are out, we will send them to you promptly. If the test was recommended by one of our GPs, they will contact you to discuss the outcomes. However, if your personal doctor ordered the test, you can share the results with them for further guidance.

When Should I Get Tested?

The frequency of your INR testing will be determined by your doctor based on your individual health needs and treatment plan. Once a testing schedule has been agreed upon, it’s vital to follow it consistently to ensure the effectiveness and safety of your warfarin treatment. Regular testing helps monitor your clotting levels and reduces the risk of complications.
