There are several reputable professional whitening brands available to UK dentists. We chose Boutique because its gels are pH-neutral (kinder to enamel), it offers both a By Day formula (around one hour of wear) and a By Night formula (worn while sleeping), and because in our hands it produces consistent, natural-looking results across a wide range of starting shades. The gel is a stable carbamide or hydrogen peroxide formula that breaks down into oxygen molecules; these penetrate the enamel and break apart the stain compounds inside the tooth, rather than simply scrubbing the surface.
Home whitening vs in-chair “laser” whitening
Many London clinics advertise one-hour in-chair whitening with a light or “laser”. The immediate result can look impressive — partly because the tooth dehydrates under the light and appears whiter — but a proportion of that change reverses within days as the tooth rehydrates. Illegal whitening in London: what the law says
Under the Dentists Act 1984 and the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013, tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry. Only a GDC-registered dentist may prescribe it, and only a dentist, hygienist, therapist or clinical dental technician working to that prescription may carry it out. Beauty salons, kiosks and mobile “whitening technicians” are breaking the law, and the General Dental Council prosecutes them regularly. Products sold to the public are capped at 0.1% hydrogen peroxide — too weak to change the colour of your enamel. If a London whitening offer seems too cheap, that is usually why.
