Herpes

Herpes refers to a viral sexually transmitted infection that exists in two forms: Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2). While HSV-2 is the primary cause of most herpes infections, HSV-1, which is commonly associated with oral herpes, can also lead to genital herpes. Genital herpes is one of the most prevalent types of this infection. Once contracted, the herpes virus remains in your body for the rest of your life.

Our Clinic provides private and discreet herpes testing. To make sure that you receive the best possible treatment, we can assist you in recognizing the obvious signs and symptoms of the disease. We also conduct all of our genital herpes tests in a private manner, and you are not required to reveal your true name.

Symptoms

Many people infected with HSV may not display symptoms initially, making it difficult to identify. But when symptoms do appear, they usually develop 2–14 days after exposure.

Genital herpes:

Primary infections of genital herpes may include:

  • Itchiness, soreness, tingling, and discomfort in the affected area
  • Flu-like symptoms such as backache, headache, fever, and muscle aches
  • Small blisters that break open, leaving red sores near the genitals, rectum, thighs, or buttocks
  • Vaginal discharge (in women)
  • Pain while urinating
  • General unwellness with aches and fever

The symptoms can endure for 20 days. The sores finally scab over and heal without leaving scars. After the initial outbreak, the virus becomes dormant in nearby nerves. Recurrent outbreaks may occur but are typically shorter and not severe compared to primary infection.

Oral herpes:

Oral herpes symptoms include:

  • An itching, tingling, or burning feeling near the mouth
  • Tiny fluid-filled sores on or near the lips that may burst and form a crust

Herpetic whitlow:

Herpetic whitlow refers to a painful infection of the finger or thumb caused by HSV. Symptoms include:

  • Swelling, redness, and tenderness around the infected area (usually near the nail bed)
  • Fever and swollen lymph nodes in some cases

Prevention

The best way to prevent herpes is to avoid vaginal, oral, and anal sexual activity, especially when open blisters are present, as they increase the risk of transmission. Avoid kissing if either person has visible cold sores.

Testing for Herpes

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) can be diagnosed through a urine test or a swab. The results are usually available within four days.

Treatment

Currently, there is no cure to eliminate HSV from the body. However, symptoms can be managed with a medication tablet known as Aciclovir. This antiviral drug works by preventing the virus from multiplying, which helps decrease the frequency, severity, and duration of outbreaks.

If you experience over six outbreaks of genital herpes per year or if the symptoms are severe and distressing, your doctor may recommend taking Aciclovir daily as part of a long-term management plan.

Frequent recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes could indicate a weakened immune system. In such cases, it is advisable to get tested for HIV.

Herpes is often diagnosed only when symptoms associated with the virus appear. So if you experience symptoms such as itchy skin, fever, or sores, it’s important to visit our Clinic for testing. A member of our team will collect a swab from the affected area to test for the virus.
