Cervical Smear Test

Frequent cervical screening (smear tests) is essential for all women since it helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cell growth in the cervix. Our clinic offers smear testing with a specialist nurse, and our screenings include HPV subtyping to detect high-risk HPV strains.

What to Expect

A smear test is a quick and straightforward procedure that provides highly accurate outcomes. During the appointment, the doctor will gently insert a speculum into the vagina and use a small, soft brush to obtain cells from the cervix. These cells are then taken to a laboratory for more analysis.

If the results indicate any abnormalities, you can consult with a doctor who will guide you on the next steps. In case a referral is needed, we will organize this for you at no additional cost.

Our smear test package also includes human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. If the HPV test is positive, the finding will either identify the most common subtypes or allow you to choose a more in-depth subtype analysis.

Symptoms

During the early stages, cervical cancer usually has no symptoms, and this is why routine screening is essential despite feeling fine. The most common symptom, when it does occur, is vaginal bleeding. However, this may not appear until the cancer is in an advanced stage, or it may never develop. As the condition progresses, more symptoms may emerge.

Vaginal bleeding can have causes apart from cervical cancer. However, it’s important to see a GP sooner to rule out cancer, determine if further testing is necessary, and, if required, arrange a referral to a specialist.

Visit South Kensington MD if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding during or after intercourse (postcoital bleeding)
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods
  • Post-menopausal bleeding

During the later stages, cervical cancer may also cause other symptoms, such as:

  • Pain or discomfort during or after sex (dyspareunia)
  • Unusual vaginal discharge that changes in quantity, color, odor, or consistency)
  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic or abdominal discomfort
  • Increased frequency of urination
  • Painful urination (dysuria)

Awareness is key to preventing cervical cancer. It could be easy to delay a smear test, but if it has been a while since your previous one, consider scheduling an appointment. Our team of experienced female doctors will ensure the process is quick, straightforward, and comfortable.
