Get Emergency AppointmentWhat Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) saves a tooth that has become infected or badly decayed. It removes the infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the canals, then seals them to prevent reinfection.
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected (from deep decay, cracks, or trauma), it causes severe pain and can lead to abscess if untreated.
Contrary to its reputation, modern root canal treatment is comfortable and often completed in a single visit. With proper anaesthesia, most patients say it's no worse than having a filling. The treatment actually relieves the severe pain caused by infection.
Root canal treatment can be very successful and may allow you to keep your natural tooth for many years, provided the tooth and surrounding tissues are suitable and well cared for. In some situations extraction may be recommended instead, with options such as leaving the space, a denture, a bridge or an implant to replace the tooth. Your dentist will discuss the benefits and limitations of each option with you.
Root Canal Cost by Tooth Type
Price depends on which tooth needs treatment and its complexity.
Root Filling - Incisor/Canine
Incisors and canines have a single canal. Treatment is typically straightforward and may be completed in one visit.
Root Filling - Premolar
Premolars usually have 1-2 canals. Slightly more complex than front teeth but still commonly single-visit.
Root Filling - Molar
Molars have 3-4 canals and complex anatomy. May require two or more visits for thorough treatment.
Re-Root Canal Treatment
When a previous root canal fails, retreatment removes old filling material and re-treats the canals.
Retrograde Root Filling
Surgical approach to treat persistent infection at the root tip when conventional retreatment isn't suitable.

The Root Canal Process
What to expect during your root canal treatment, step by step.
Diagnosis & X-rays
We take a history, examine the tooth and take X-rays where clinically appropriate to assess the infection, identify the canals and plan your treatment.
15 minsLocal Anaesthetic
The tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed. You may feel some pressure but should not feel pain. If you do feel discomfort at any point, we can give more anaesthetic.
10 minsAccess & Cleaning
A small opening is made in the crown. The infected pulp is removed and canals are meticulously cleaned and shaped.
30-60 minsFilling & Sealing
Canals are filled with biocompatible material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling protects the tooth.
15 minsCrown (Recommended)
A crown restores full strength and protects the treated tooth. Usually fitted 2 weeks later.
