What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) saves a tooth that has become infected or badly decayed. It removes the infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the canals, then seals them to prevent reinfection.

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected (from deep decay, cracks, or trauma), it causes severe pain and can lead to abscess if untreated.

Contrary to its reputation, modern root canal treatment is comfortable and often completed in a single visit. With proper anaesthesia, most patients say it's no worse than having a filling. The treatment actually relieves the severe pain caused by infection.

Root canal treatment can be very successful and may allow you to keep your natural tooth for many years, provided the tooth and surrounding tissues are suitable and well cared for. In some situations extraction may be recommended instead, with options such as leaving the space, a denture, a bridge or an implant to replace the tooth. Your dentist will discuss the benefits and limitations of each option with you.

Nothing beats your natural tooth. Here's why root canal is almost always the better choice.

Save Your Natural Tooth

Where appropriate, root canal treatment can help you keep a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.

Stop Pain Immediately

Most patients feel dramatic relief as soon as the infected nerve tissue is removed

Modern & Comfortable

With proper anaesthesia, root canal is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed

Prevent Serious Infection

Untreated tooth infections can spread and become more serious. If you have swelling, fever, or worsening pain, seek urgent assessment or call 111.

Cost-Effective Long Term

Cheaper than extraction followed by implant or bridge. Your natural tooth is priceless

Quick Recovery

Return to normal eating and activities within 24-48 hours. Minimal downtime

The Root Canal Process

What to expect during your root canal treatment, step by step.

1

Diagnosis & X-rays

We take a history, examine the tooth and take X-rays where clinically appropriate to assess the infection, identify the canals and plan your treatment.

15 mins
2

Local Anaesthetic

The tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed. You may feel some pressure but should not feel pain. If you do feel discomfort at any point, we can give more anaesthetic.

10 mins
3

Access & Cleaning

A small opening is made in the crown. The infected pulp is removed and canals are meticulously cleaned and shaped.

30-60 mins
4

Filling & Sealing

Canals are filled with biocompatible material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling protects the tooth.

15 mins
5

Crown (Recommended)

A crown restores full strength and protects the treated tooth. Usually fitted 2 weeks later.
