Types of Coils Available

There are two main types of coils:

  • Copper Coil (IUD:hormone-free option offering long-term use (5-10 years). * Hormonal Coil (IUS): small-device option with hormone release; may provide additional support for menstrual health.
  • Hormonal Coil (IUS): A small T-shaped plastic device that releases a hormone called progestogen to prevent pregnancy and may also help with heavy periods. Effective for 3 to 5 years.

Both are safe, highly effective, and reversible. However, they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

What is an IUS?

Your doctor may recommend male hormone testing if you experience symptoms of low testosterone, such as:

Coil Fitting Procedure

Coils can be removed at any time by a trained clinician. If you're not planning to replace the coil and wish to avoid pregnancy, use additional contraception (e.g. condoms) for 7 days before removal.

Key Notes:

  • Quick and simple outpatient procedure
  • Fertility usually returns immediately after removal
  • Safe for both IUD and IUS removals

Important Pre-Fitting Advice

  • If you're on hormonal contraception or using condoms, continue use for 7 days before the fitting
  • If you use no regular method, abstain from sex from your period until the coil fitting
  • Replacing an old coil? Avoid sex or use condoms 7 days before your fitting

Coils can be removed at any time by a trained clinician. If you're not planning to replace the coil and wish to avoid pregnancy, use additional contraception (e.g. condoms) for 7 days before removal.
