Thrush

Thrush results from an overgrowth of yeast and is a common condition that can affect anyone. While it’s not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), some people may notice symptoms after sexual activity, although transmission during sex is rare.

Vaginal thrush, in particular, is very common, with about 75% of women and individuals with uteruses experiencing it at some point in their lives. Although it can cause discomfort, it’s easily treatable and does not seriously threaten your health.

At Southkenmd.co.uk Clinic, we specialize in diagnosing and treating thrush to help patients find relief from discomfort and regain confidence.

Causes of Thrush

Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a yeast that naturally exists in the body. It’s commonly found on the skin, in the mouth, gut, bowel, and vagina, and is usually kept in check by the immune system without causing issues.

While thrush often develops without a particular trigger, certain factors can increase the likelihood of its occurrence, including:

  • Recent use of antibiotics
  • Using perfumed soaps, shower gels or scented sanitary pads or tampons
  • Pregnancy, due to hormonal changes
  • A weakened immune system
  • Uncontrolled diabetes

Additionally, minor irritation or friction in the region can contribute to thrush, which is why some people experience it after intercourse or masturbation.

Symptoms of Thrush

Vaginal thrush:

The vaginal thrush signs may include:

  • Itchiness or soreness around the vaginal entrance
  • A stinging feeling when urinating
  • Vaginal discharge that is thick, white, and often resembles cottage cheese
  • Pain during vaginal intercourse

In more severe cases, symptoms can also include:

  • Redness and swelling of the vagina and vulva
  • Cracked skin around the vaginal entrance, which may bleed

Thrush in men:

Penile and male genitals thrush is less common, but symptoms, usually affecting the tip of the penis and foreskin, may include:

  • Burning, irritation, and redness
  • A thick, white accumulation
  • Difficulty retracting the foreskin

Tests and Treatment for Thrush

You can purchase thrush treatments over the counter at pharmacies, but you can also consult a sexual health clinic or GP for advice and treatment. It’s especially important to seek professional assistance if:

  • It’s your first time experiencing these symptoms
  • You’re below 16 or above 60
  • You’ve had thrush 4 times or more in 12 months
  • You’re expectant or breastfeeding
  • You have a compromised immune system

A doctor or nurse may perform a physical examination and obtain a swab from the affected region to confirm the diagnosis. Based on this, we can provide prescription treatments or recommend the most effective over-the-counter options.

Contrary to most myths, Hepatitis C cannot be transmitted through shaking hands, hugging, kissing, or even food or beverages.

Treatment Options

The thrush treatment options we provide involve the following:

  • Tablets: You can take these orally or insert them into your vagina to treat the infection.
  • Anti-thrush creams: Applied to the skin around the vaginal entrance, these creams help relieve itching and soreness. However, be aware that these creams are likely to weaken condoms, increasing the risk of breakage.

Most individuals find that treatment works effectively, with symptoms of vaginal thrush typically clearing up after a few days, though it can take up to two weeks in some cases. Always follow the full course of treatment as directed by your GP or pharmacist to ensure the infection is fully resolved.
