Private Early HIV Detection in London
South Kensington Medical & Dental offers early HIV detection testing at our CQC-registered clinic. This test is designed for individuals who require screening at an earlier stage following potential exposure, typically using p24 antigen detection or RNA-based methods.
Testing requires a venous blood sample, with results available within 1 working day. This test is priced at £66 (includes £50 phlebotomy fee). Early detection testing can identify HIV infection sooner than standard antibody-based screening.
No GP referral is needed. All samples are processed at UKAS-accredited laboratories. Results are communicated confidentially and, where appropriate, followed up with confirmatory testing.
Why Early Detection Matters
Standard antibody-based HIV tests have a window period of approximately 4 weeks. During this time, an infected individual may test negative despite being positive. Early detection tests can reduce this window period by detecting p24 antigen, which appears in the blood before antibodies develop.
Early identification of HIV infection allows for prompt initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), which improves individual health outcomes and significantly reduces the risk of onward transmission. The PARTNER study demonstrated that individuals with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV sexually.
When to Choose Early Detection Testing
Recent exposure (within 4 weeks)
Standard antibody tests may not be reliable during this early window period.
High-risk exposure
Occupational needle-stick injuries, sexual assault, or condom failure with a known positive partner.
Anxiety about waiting
Earlier testing provides quicker reassurance or enables faster access to treatment.
PEP assessment
Can help determine HIV status when post-exposure prophylaxis is being considered.
