Private HIV Viral Load Test in London
South Kensington Medical & Dental offers private HIV-1 RNA viral load testing at our CQC-registered clinic. This quantitative PCR test measures the amount of HIV-1 RNA in the blood, expressed as copies per millilitre. It is a critical tool for monitoring treatment response and disease progression.
Testing requires a simple sample, with results available within 3 days. This test is priced at £211.
No GP referral is required. All samples are processed at UKAS-accredited laboratories. Results are communicated confidentially and can be shared with your treating physician if requested.
Understanding Viral Load Testing
Viral load measures the quantity of HIV RNA in the blood. A lower viral load indicates better control of the virus, typically through antiretroviral therapy (ART). The goal of treatment is to achieve an undetectable viral load (below 200 copies/ml), which means the virus cannot be transmitted sexually — known as Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U).
Viral load monitoring is recommended at treatment initiation, at regular intervals during therapy, and whenever treatment changes are made. A rising viral load may indicate treatment failure, poor adherence, or the development of drug resistance.
Who Needs Viral Load Testing?
HIV-positive individuals on ART
Regular monitoring confirms treatment is effectively suppressing the virus.
Treatment initiation
Baseline viral load is measured before starting antiretroviral therapy.
Suspected treatment failure
A detectable viral load despite adherence may indicate drug resistance.
U=U confirmation
Documented undetectable viral load supports the Undetectable = Untransmittable evidence.
