About Syphilis Antibody Testing
Syphilis is caused by the spirochaete bacterium Treponema pallidum and is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilitic sore (chancre). Syphilis rates in the UK have been rising, with over 8,000 cases diagnosed annually.
The IgG/IgM test is an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) that detects treponemal antibodies. IgM antibodies appear early in infection, while IgG persists long-term. A positive result requires further testing (such as RPR/VDRL) to determine disease activity and stage.
