This test measures the blood level of lithium, a mood-stabilising medication used to treat bipolar disorder. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic window, and levels that are too high can cause serious toxicity.
Who Should Consider the Lithium?
Patients taking lithium for bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or treatment-resistant depression. Regular monitoring is essential throughout treatment to ensure levels remain safe and effective.
Blood should be taken 12 hours after the last dose (trough level). The therapeutic range is typically 0.4-1.0 mmol/L. Kidney function and thyroid function should also be monitored regularly.
