Fasting Insulin Resistance Index - HOMA IR – Private Testing in London

The Fasting Insulin Resistance Index (HOMA-IR) is available at South Kensington Medical and Dental, our CQC-registered clinic in South Kensington, London SW7. This test is priced at £98. A £50 phlebotomy fee applies per visit for blood collection. It requires a venous blood sample taken after an overnight fast, and results are typically available within 1 day.

HOMA-IR is calculated from your fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels and is one of the most widely used non-invasive markers of insulin resistance. A higher HOMA-IR value indicates that your body is producing more insulin to keep blood glucose stable — an early warning sign that may precede pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Your results should be interpreted alongside your symptoms, BMI, lipid profile and HbA1c by a clinician.

Who Should Consider the Fasting Insulin Resistance Index (HOMA-IR)?

This test may be helpful if you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, are overweight or have central (abdominal) obesity, have been told you have pre-diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD) or metabolic syndrome, or experience symptoms such as persistent fatigue after meals, sugar cravings, unexplained weight gain or skin changes such as acanthosis nigricans (dark velvety patches at the neck or armpits).

HOMA-IR is also useful for tracking your response to lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, weight loss) or to medication such as metformin or GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is not a diagnostic test on its own — clinical correlation with your full history, examination and other markers (HbA1c, fasting glucose, lipids, liver function) is essential.

A trained nurse collects the blood sample by standard venepuncture, which typically takes around five minutes. Our clinic is on Old Brompton Road, directly opposite South Kensington tube station (Piccadilly, Circle, and District lines). No GP referral is needed — book online or call 020 7183 2362.

Insulin Resistance & Metabolic Health

Insulin resistance can develop years before blood glucose becomes abnormal. HOMA-IR helps detect it early so you can act before pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes develops.

  • Type 2 diabetes risk assessment
  • Pre-diabetes monitoring
  • PCOS investigation and follow-up
  • Metabolic syndrome workup
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this blood test

Yes — fasting is essential for HOMA-IR. Please fast for 8–12 hours before your appointment (water only, no food, milk, juice, tea or coffee). HOMA-IR is calculated from fasting glucose and fasting insulin, so non-fasting samples will not give a valid result.
