When to Consider Allergy Testing

If you experience recurring, unexplained symptoms, an IgE blood test can help identify potential triggers to discuss with your doctor.

Hay Fever & Rhinitis

Sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked nose — seasonal or year-round

Food Reactions

Hives, swelling, stomach upset or tingling after eating

Childhood Allergies

Eczema, feeding reactions or suspected food allergy in children

Drug Sensitivities

Suspected reactions to penicillin or other antibiotics

Why an IgE Blood Test?

  • No need to stop antihistamines — unlike skin-prick testing, blood IgE results are unaffected by allergy medication.
  • One sample, many answers — hundreds of allergens can be screened from a single venous draw.
  • Suitable for children and eczema-prone skin — no skin exposure to allergens required.

Important to know

A positive IgE result shows sensitisation to an allergen — it does not by itself confirm a clinical allergy. Your written laboratory report should be interpreted by a GP or allergy specialist alongside your symptoms and history. All testing is carried out at UKAS-accredited UK laboratories under the clinical governance of our CQC-registered clinic, with oversight by a GMC-registered doctor.

Allergy Testing FAQs

How does a blood allergy test work?
A small venous blood sample is collected by our clinical team and analysed at a UKAS-accredited UK laboratory for allergen-specific IgE antibodies. Elevated IgE to a particular allergen indicates sensitisation, which your GP or specialist can interpret alongside your symptoms.
Can I take antihistamines before my test?
Yes. Unlike skin-prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines, so there is no need to stop your medication before your appointment.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. All allergy tests are available on a self-referral basis — simply book online and attend your appointment.
Do I need to fast before an allergy test?
No fasting is required for allergy blood tests. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
How long do results take?
Most allergy panel results are available within 3–5 working days, delivered to you via our secure portal. The comprehensive ALEX³ test may take slightly longer.
What happens if my results are positive?
You receive a written laboratory report showing your IgE results. A positive result indicates sensitisation to an allergen; it should be interpreted alongside your symptoms by a GP or allergy specialist, who can advise on management. We are a diagnostic testing service and do not provide allergy treatment.
Which allergy test should I choose?
If you have multiple unexplained symptoms and want the broadest picture, the ALEX³ test screens over 300 allergens in one sample. If you suspect a specific category — for example nuts, seafood or pollen — a targeted profile is more economical. To confirm a single known trigger, an individual allergen test from £48 is usually sufficient.
Is allergy blood testing suitable for children?
Yes. Blood testing is often preferred for children as it requires a single sample and is unaffected by antihistamines. Our Children’s Panel (Allergy Profile 5) covers the most common paediatric allergens.
