About Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It primarily infects the urogenital tract and is transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms may include vaginal discharge (often frothy and yellow-green), vulval irritation, dysuria, and an unpleasant odour. However, up to 50% of women and most men are asymptomatic.
Untreated trichomoniasis is associated with increased HIV transmission risk, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and chronic genital inflammation. Treatment with metronidazole or tinidazole is highly effective.
