Private Mycoplasma Genitalium Test in London
South Kensington Medical & Dental provides private Mycoplasma genitalium PCR testing at our CQC-registered clinic. M. genitalium is an emerging sexually transmitted infection increasingly recognised as a significant cause of urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Testing uses a self-collected urine sample, with results available within 1-2 weeks. This test is priced at £230. PCR-based NAAT testing is the only reliable method for detecting this organism.
No GP referral is required. All samples are processed at UKAS-accredited laboratories. Results are communicated confidentially.
About Mycoplasma Genitalium
Mycoplasma genitalium is a small, fastidious bacterium that was only identified as an STI pathogen relatively recently. It is now recognised as the second most common cause of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) in men and is associated with cervicitis, PID, and adverse pregnancy outcomes in women.
M. genitalium cannot be detected by standard culture methods — PCR testing is essential. BASHH guidelines recommend testing for M. genitalium in cases of persistent or recurrent urethritis, cervicitis, or PID, particularly when first-line treatments have failed.
When to Test for Mycoplasma Genitalium
Persistent urethritis
Symptoms that do not resolve with standard chlamydia/gonorrhoea treatment.
Recurrent cervicitis
Ongoing cervical inflammation after appropriate antibiotic therapy.
PID investigation
M. genitalium should be considered as a cause of pelvic inflammatory disease.
Partner notification
Sexual partners of confirmed M. genitalium cases should be tested.
