Private Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Test in London
South Kensington Medical & Dental offers private hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) testing at our CQC-registered clinic. HBsAg is the primary marker for current hepatitis B virus infection — its presence in the blood indicates that the individual is currently infected and potentially infectious.
Testing requires a venous blood sample, with results available within 1 working day. This test is priced at £110 (includes £50 phlebotomy fee).
No GP referral is required. All samples are processed at UKAS-accredited laboratories. Results are communicated confidentially through our secure patient portal.
What Is Hepatitis B Surface Antigen?
HBsAg is a protein found on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. Its presence in a blood sample confirms active HBV infection. If HBsAg persists for more than six months, the infection is classified as chronic. Conversely, clearance of HBsAg typically indicates resolution of infection.
This is often the first test performed when screening for hepatitis B. A positive result requires further testing (including HBeAg, viral load, and liver function tests) to determine the stage and activity of the infection.
When Is HBsAg Testing Recommended?
Routine screening
Part of standard blood-borne virus screening in sexual health and antenatal settings.
Occupational health
Required for healthcare workers and those in exposure-prone procedures.
Post-exposure assessment
Following needle-stick injury or sexual contact with a known carrier.
Chronic hepatitis monitoring
Tracking HBsAg levels over time helps assess disease activity.
