About Gardnerella Vaginalis
Gardnerella vaginalis is a key organism in the development of bacterial vaginosis. BV occurs when the normal Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal flora is replaced by anaerobic bacteria, including Gardnerella. While not traditionally classified as an STI, BV is associated with sexual activity and can be triggered by new sexual partners.
Symptoms of BV include thin, greyish-white vaginal discharge with a characteristic fishy odour, particularly after intercourse. BV is associated with increased risk of STI acquisition, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and post-surgical infections.
