Huntington Disease - HD gene repeat analysis PCR – Private Testing in London
The Huntington Disease HD gene repeat analysis is available at South Kensington Medical and Dental, our CQC-registered clinic in South Kensington, London SW7. This test is priced at £560. A £50 phlebotomy fee applies per visit for blood collection. It requires a venous blood sample, and results are typically available within 5 weeks. A referral from a clinical neurologist or clinical geneticist is required before this test can be ordered.
Huntington disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition caused by an expansion of CAG trinucleotide repeats in the HTT (huntingtin) gene on chromosome 4. This PCR-based test measures the number of CAG repeats to determine whether an individual carries the pathogenic expansion associated with the disease.
Who Should Consider Huntington Disease Testing?
Individuals with a family history of Huntington disease who wish to know their genetic status (predictive testing). Those presenting with chorea, cognitive decline, or psychiatric symptoms suggestive of Huntington disease (diagnostic testing). This is a life-changing genetic test and pre-test genetic counselling is mandatory.
Normal alleles have up to 26 CAG repeats. Intermediate alleles (27-35 repeats) are not associated with disease but may expand in future generations. Reduced penetrance alleles (36-39 repeats) may or may not cause disease. Full penetrance alleles (40 or more repeats) will cause disease if the individual lives long enough.
A trained nurse collects the blood sample by standard venepuncture at our clinic on Old Brompton Road, directly opposite South Kensington tube station (Piccadilly, Circle, and District lines). A referral from a clinical neurologist or clinical geneticist is required — please call 020 7183 2362 to arrange.
